They will NOT be having ANY organized rides this year, including the big mombo jumbo gazillion scooter ride, due to legal concerns. Apparently there was some dude that crashed during the Indy Rally last year (???) and then tried to sue the club, so that put a damper on things. I'm not sure if they plan on passing out flyers with 'suggested' rides or what, but it is mainly left up to the participants to form their own little tours of the area.

No ride

Thanks, Tom. The rumor that a guy crashed and tried to sue the Club in Indiana is just that: A Rumor. It happened two years ago and at last year's Indy Rally we were assured by the Clubs in Indy the guy that crashed didn't do any such thing.

We went to a Rally in Nashville once and it was a camping Rally. No rides, many people left scooters at home and lots of debauchery. Sounds like this year's "KRP Rally. :|

Hmm. I dunno. That's just what I was told by one of the organizers and that's what the decision was based on. You sure it didn't happen again last year? Hehe... I'm sure some of it might have had to do with last year's KRP ride too. Although it APPEARED to go well, I think they had three crashes (maybe 4+?) during the ride. I witnessed one, and knew of at least two others. ...and I know the motorcycle escorts had a few close calls. When you've got a group that big, with a lot of unknown factors mixed in, it gets crazy. I think they're missing an opportunity through, because out in Oxford (actually well North of Oxford, Northeast of College Corner where camp-HQ is) it's wide open country and less hazardous for a long parade of scoots IMHO.

I think it's gonna be a good time, but who's to really say? I hear they're gonna have scooter games, a scavenger hunt, music (maybe a live band), good food, etc. All still in the planning stages, so I can't really say specifically. The scavenger hunt is suppose to be something to do with panties, so I figured that was right up your alley. Ha! I don't see why scooters games would be less of a risk than a group ride, but I dunno. I'm not making any decisions. Hehe...

It's at Hannon's Camp America.

The rally registration includes the camping, breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and I'm guessing a rally T-Shirt and door prizes. I think it has the potential to be a lot of fun. I'm not exactly sure HOW I'm going to participate yet, but since it's basically in my back yard, I'm eager to see how things go.

Fun

Postby Bonegirl » 10 Feb 2011, 11:27

I am sure it will be fun. 8)

Also sure no one tried to sue anyone. Indy had much bigger problems than someone trying to sue them. We were there last year so I got all the scoop from so many people I can say this with absolute certainty. What good are Waivers if someone can still sue? No need to answer, just sayin....

Since me and Ben always ended up having our own separate groups during the Rally Ride (lost or broken down souls), I don't know why it can't be divided into several smaller groups. Of course this would require more Club help but it would be much easier to handle.

Anyway, we'll see what happens. There are lots of riding spots so I hope it's not wasted. Nashville had so much to see and ride so we were disappointed no one was suggesting a ride. We just took off early in the morning and took our chances. This was before GPS was used much so we stayed fairly close to "home".

The Sound rider Rally in Oregon handled the rides informally. a map board with sheets for suggested rides was featured. People Just Planned there own rides and recruited friends to ride along. the organizers had rides suggestions. I knew no one, but in the maxi scooter group folks just became friends and road together as small group rides. there where 250 riders at the rally doing the same.

First off... I don't want you to think I'm arguing with you or trying to pick a fight. You should know better than that, but I'm tossing this out there just in case. ;)

I've just gotta ask. IF someone crashed at the rally last year, how would you know whether or not they pursued legal action DURING the rally? Wouldn't it take a couple weeks at least before any papers were served?

Bonegirl wrote:What good are Waivers if someone can still sue? No need to answer, just sayin....

Actually, a waiver does not provide very good legal protection during a group ride although I know several clubs use them and feel protected in doing so. I'm not sure if that was what you were implying, or if you genuinely thought that waivers were a good CYA precaution.

Yes, I know.

This is getting off topic. I fully realize Waivers only go so far.; I was being sarcastic.

I attended the 2009 and 2010 Indy Rallies and spoke with organizers. There was a crash in 2009 and no group ride in 2010 so no crash. I found out from organizers the problem was strictly internal and had nothing to do with any lawsuit. I don't mean to be argumentative but I heard this lawsuit thing for 6 months before this past Rally. Again, it supposedly had to do with the 2009 Rally.

Either way, I know a group ride has potential for lots of problems.

Now I would like to rest my case and move on. :)

I was also at Indy last year. No official group rally rides. I rode with a small group to Bloomington and back on Sat. No crashes. The other alternative was doing the scavenger hunt on your own. Not a group ride. No crashes...that we heard of. If WKRP organizers made the decision based on the rumor from 2009 (which was a very strong rumor for several months as BG pointed out) without checking facts, that's a bummer. I would've preferred them to just say "We're getting too big to do a ride safely in such an urban area." And after last year's ride, I would agree. It's a pain to escort 300ish scooters on a ride when you're starting in the middle of a city. So I think moving it out to the country is a great idea. But if there aren't any rides planned, that may play a big part in whether or not I attend or for how long.

Yes there was wreck at the Gasoline Rally a couple of years back. Yes that person spent some serious time in the hospital. NO that person did not sue. He was completely cool about it. When it was all over he has bummed about his rally shirt being shredded. We sent him a new shirt.

That wreck did freak out our main sponsors. They got really paranoid about getting sued. This led to our rally completely falling apart last year. As a result we have created an entity that will insulate our sponsors from liability. We are on for this year and ready to rock! I expect this Gasoline Rally to be our best. We are partnering with MotoGP this year.

I have no idea if our issues have impacted KRP planning for this year. I certainly hope not. The legal concerns are complete bullshit as far as I am concerned. Wake up people. Your lawyers are making life sterile and pathetic for all of us. When I set myself on fire in a drunkin frenzy, it is my fault alone. I can only hope that I got in a burst of flames.

Hi, Apple! Thanks for your input! I know there were all kinds of issues last year but I still had an awesome time and many of us made the most of the Rally anyway!

Probably not going to attend the 'KRP Rally this year. The Ride is important to me; possibility I'll hook up with my out-of-town friends and see if I can lead them on some sort of ride out there if interested.
