Tires and Dealers

Unread postby dademoss » 22 Aug 2010, 18:15

The time has come, another 3000 fun filled miles has passed and it's time to start thinking about another rear tire for the Vespa.

I would like to pool your collective experiences and get you all to help me pick a new candidate.

The size is 130/70 x 12. For history, the Factory original Sava went about 3200 miles, replace by a Continental Zippy. The Zippy looks like it will go another few hundred miles for a total miles similar to the Sava.

Help me pick a nice tire :D and a good inexpensive dealer :o

My thanks for your assistance :)

I like these ---> http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/5/32/404/15038/ITEM/Shinko-SR007-Front---Rear-Scooter-tire.aspx

I have one in your size on the Big Ruckus right now and am very happy with it.

Are you looking for a dealer to install it or are you doing it yourself?

Thanks, that was one of my likely candidates. I will DIY , I love fighting with beads :shock:

I have 3 rims, so I can put it on the spare rim till I need to change it (after I get the old front off of course :mrgreen:

This year I had to buy both tires, the rear was changed first, then when I thought I had time for the front it started to cup, so I had that changed too. I had auto4n do it for me cause the last time I worked on the rear I messed up the wheel, had to have wheel replaced.($$$$$$$$$), so now I had them do it.

Is 3,000 mi about average for scoot tires? I know its premature for me, I only have 1,000mi on my SH and 1,800 on the Elite but just curious? I did some hunting for the heck of it for the SH with the sizes 100/80R16 & 120/80R16 just for price comparisons and I couldn't locate them anywhere, I wonder if I'll have to go straight from Honda??? I know Sheila has 16" wheels, I wonder if she has had to replace yet??

Depending on how you ride and how much load you carry, scoot tires seem to last between 4000 and 8000 miles. Of course I've seen some go bald in less than 3000 and I've someone get over 10,000 on a 10" tire. (how's that for a non answer. :) )

Motorcycle Superstore has an online "tire finder" that I've used in the past just to see what's available. It lists 15 different rear tires and 2 front ones in your sizes.

Motorcycle superstore gets a huge thumbs up, tire is here already :shock:

The Shinko SR007 looks very nice, and it mounted on the rim like a dream. :mrgreen:
