Service costs- Yikes, HELP!!!!

Unread postby strkngfang » 09 May 2011, 19:13

First off I was never taught and have very little mechanical ability. If a vehicle needs service then take it to someone skilled is how I was raised. This being said I need to look for another alternative to the dealer performing various mile services etc. I can't justify 100.00 for inspections and an oil change, that is highway robbery. I've never taken my cars to dealers but with our scoots I feel trapped by lack of choices??
Is anyone skilled enough with scoots to do oil changes etc because I will gladly pay you, as long as you don't charge me 70.00 per hour like the Honda dealer does. I need to feel safe on the road, especially on two wheels.
I just had 2,500 mi services on both the SH150i and the Elite 110 so I should be good for at least half the summer, depending on how much I can ride??? I wanted to get some "feelers" out now. Any experienced takers???? I have friends that work on their own motorcycles but they tell me scooters are an entirely different "animal"???

Do you have the owner or shop manuals? If you do, I'd have no problem showing you how to change the oil at no charge.

Checking transmission fluid levels and coolant levels are just as easy. The complicating factor with scooters is the bodywork - it adds labor time.

I do most of the easy work on my SV650 and the regular maintanence on my car, so I would mind showing you what I know.

I found that changing oil on my Burgman is a pain as I need to take off a layer of plastic. I hate changing oil or doing any repairs but going to the dealer is a rip off. $75 bucks an hour plus the oil change and knowing it only takes no more than a half hour to change the oil but I still get charged $100 bucks.

I found out here that Sport Tour on Reading Road in Sharonville is the place to go. They charge $65 bucks an hour and charge for the time they put into the scooter or motorcycle. I had a GIVI trunk put on, oil change, and transmission oil changed and the cost was $110.00. I consider that a deal compared to my dealer who is way to high.

Yesterday I was at my Burgman dealer and they had at least 100 bikes waiting for repair at $75 plus and hour and parts that are marked up three times. I would say the owner of that dealership is doing very well.

Something with a manual you can do yourself yet other things you need to take it to someone who knows what to do and repair the bike properly. The problem I have is I live pretty far away from Sport Tour or the dealer. So if I do a repair on my bike and something goes wrong then what?

The nice thing I've noticed about Honda scooters is that you can usually change the oil without pulling any bodywork. The oil drain and fill points are usually exposed (on the right hand side, just aft of the center stand). Both my Elite and the new Reflex have this, so I figure it's a Honda design tendency.

Thanks, I noticed that myself. I think I'm going to get the service manuals for both of my scoots and take it from there. The manuals are said to be very informative and excellent illustrations. Believe it or not my wife can take a computer completely apart and rebuild it or make her own so she could probably rescue me. I have a few months before I need to worry about it but thanks for the comments all of you. I don't know why dealers have to rip you off so much? I guess because they can!!
