If you are new to scootering and especially new to Group Riding, here are the basics you should know for today's ride:
1) Remember to always ride YOUR RIDE. Regardless of how fast everyone else is going, ride at the speed you are most comfortable with at all times. If you go down, it should be due to someone else's carelessness, not your own.
2) Ride in a staggered formation with at least 2-3 seconds between you and the scooter in front of you. There are several reasons for this: you have a clear view of the road in front of you, you have time to react to a situation that may involve the scooterist in front of you to swerve or even go down and you give yourself and other scooterists around you enough room to make last minute decisions without worrying how close your neighbor is and how your actions may affect them.
3) Stay in a close group when approaching traffic lights or stop signs. It is often possible for many scooters to get through intersections if you are in a tight configuration. If another scooterist is "blocking" at an intersection, stay close to the group and move as quickly as possible to allow everyone to make it through in an orderly and safe manner.
4) The best rule of thumb to insure no one is left behind is to always know where the person behind you is at all times. If you lose sight of the scooter behind you, honk to alert the rest of the group. Pull to the side of the road and stop when it is safe to do so. If the only person you are responsible for is the person behind you and that person has stopped, eventually the leaders of the Group will have stopped as well. No one should ever be lost or left behind. This will never happen if you stop and wait for the rider behind you. A chain reaction should occur where the ride leader has slowed down or stopped until the Group is fully together again.
