Wondering if the gist of the article Ang posted was missed here. It really didn't have anything at all to do with convenience or rudeness, but rather presenting a significant amount of evidence suggesting lane-splitting might in fact be safer for 2 wheelers. Counter-intuitive as the article points out, but apparently so.
Having lived in Europe where 'traffic filtering' has been acceptable for decades, I guess I don't have as much of a problem with it. But I agree with Ang, only as long as cagers are aware that 2 wheelers may be coming astride. Sure, people in cars may see it as rude and feel slighted. But at least if they are aware of it and experience and evidence proves it's safer, then why not? Otherwise we continue to practice something that is less safe(?).
I'm not saying I'm convinced by this one article - but I do think it's interesting and important to note that lane-splitting *could be safer* when you look at the facts. I'm sure more study and statistics is necessary still for anything conclusive.
