Izzy International Ride Saturday 7/16

Postby burgman2170 » 05 Jul 2011, 21:26

I found this on the Yahoo Burgman Forum a few months ago and thought I would mention it to the group here. Not sure if anyone ever took this ride before as I have heard some good things and so not so good things about the organization of the ride last year. I did sign up for the ride last month and it appears that there is going to be many Burgmans on the ride but all motorcycles and scooter riders are welcome.

The main organizer is coming down from Canada and I do believe there are several other riders coming from Northern Ohio as well. Many of these riders are stopping off at Wright Patterson on the way back for a tour.

All the details are listed below and a map of the ride is also included. Check it out! I have a meeting on tomorrow with one of the riders to talk over the details. I will send more information about the ride if there is something new.

Thanks
Les

Driving directions for the International Izzy's Ride!

We charge no dues nor entry fee. We raise no money. Just a nice ride in the country followed by dinner as a group. ALL 2-3 WHEELERS ARE WELCOME but there will be a preponderance of Suzuki Burgman 400’s and 650’s.

Start gathering at 11:30 AM, eat at noon at Izzy's in Forest Park with intermediate stops in Brookville, IN, Metamora, IN followed by dinner at the Sherman House in Batesville.

Sunset is at 9:03 Cincinnati time so there will be plenty of light to drive home after dinner.

The return from Batesville to home will depend, of course, on your destination. I will be going cross country back to Brookville and then directly east to Hamilton, I-75 and on to Mason. Others may choose to use Harrison Ave or I-74 back to Cincinnati or some other scenic route of their choice.

Please be sure to join us for dinner.

Unless something drastic happens here’s the route we will follow for the ride. Click on the small map at the end of the text to get the BIG picture.

Possibly

Postby Bonegirl » 06 Jul 2011, 21:31

I may possibly be up for this ride. I have heard good and bad things but if there's enough of us going, it won't matter! It will be great no matter what! Thanks, Les!

Randy, I think me and Ben are interested. Ben says it may come down to a last minute decision depending on what he has to do before now and then (always working on his scooters) but for today, looks pretty good to go. Had heard some not-so-good things from people in the past but if a group of us are going, we can make it a good time! 8)

Here is the latest information on the Izzy ride that was posted last Wednesday. It looks to be a good time if the weather cooperates. As it is right now I will be on the ride unless something pops up. I went on the Warren County Covered Bridge Ride this past Saturday. Over 110 motorcycles and two Burgmans on the ride that covered over 100 miles. The ride was well organized had road blockers, and raised money of parents who can't afford gifts for their kids at Christmas.
Les

On July 4th I did the pre ride on our proposed route for this year ‘s Izzy’s ride. As is posted previously we’ll eat at noon at Forest Park Izzy’s and start riding an hour later. It takes a little over an hour to arrive in Brookville where we’ll stop at the local McDonald’s for a drink and potty break. The next segment of the ride is north to the mid lake causeway crossing over Brookville Lake and then into wide open Indiana farm country on the way to Metamora, IN. At a couple points the road narrows to one lane but is still in good shape. One neat place in the road is a creek crossing where the “bridge” is a bunch of large diameter pipes laid in the creek bed and then covered with concrete. The water runs through the pipes and traffic rolls over the pipes. When it rains hard the creek comes up and covers the pipes and the road is closed. Pray for no rain! Haha.

Metamora is an old time town with a collection of somewhat rundown buildings along a railroad track and segment of the closed Miami Whitewater canal. There are lots of small tourist type shops with scented candles, ice cream, tee shirts, wood crafts, canal boat rides and a 30 minute scenic train ride on a real train. We can talk about how long to stay there and shop and ride.

The next segment is the relatively short trip through Oldenburg to Batesville and dinner at the Sherman House. Oldenburg is home to a large convent and national headquarters of the Sisters of St. Francis. The related coed high school and huge church are all within 2-3 blocks of each other. Some of the streets are paved with bricks. The street signs are in German. Batesville’s largest industries are all owned by the Hillenbrand family. They have one of the largest casket factories in the USA and they also manufacture lots of hospital beds, tables and other hospital furniture under the brand name of Hill-Rom. That table that rolled over and under your hospital bed probably came from HillRom in Batesville. They also have a prepaid funeral insurance business called FORETHOUGHT. All in all, many major contributions in the town (jobs, golf courses, airport, library, parks etc) have come from or through the Hillenbrand family. It is a nice clean, orderly, quiet town. We’ll probably park in the municipal lot directly across from the Sherman House unless there is enough street parking available at the front door.

The ride back home can be via major highways to Cincinnati or the “old” highway (Harrison Ave) that was replaced by I-74. Personally, I’ll be going on a different cross country route back to Brookville and then east on 252 and 129 to downtown Hamilton and then further east to I-75. I imagine Richard will follow along with me so he can then head north to Dayton. I encountered no bad roads on my test drive and we should have an enjoyable afternoon.

**********************************************************************

Please try to follow these simple guidelines during the ride:

Arrive on time. Sign the attendance sheet so if you become missing we’ll know for whom we are looking and what you are riding.

If you go shopping at one of the stops arrive BACK on time for departure.

Travel as a group. Don’t leave the group behind or go ahead without telling the lead rider. When we count noses and come up short we don’t know if you are wrecked in a ditch, broke down, lost or worse. This leaving without checking has happened in each of the last three years and caused considerable wasted time, effort and anxiety only to find out that so-and-so turned right and apparently went home when everyone else turned left on the tour. Please be on time and stay together.

If you have a FMRS radio (typically a low power $20-50 family communications walkie talkie) please charge it up and bring it.

Be sure to review the links on the previous posting on 7/4. Especially the Sherman House menu. Note that since it will be a Saturday they will have Roast Prime Rib on the menu!

See you in 10 days.

So I see that the ride will start by meeting for lunch at and then leaving from Izzy's Forest Park, correct? What is the projected time of departure from Izzy's for the ride? Katherine and I are interested in joining in but I have to work till 2pm at store and then drive that way,(45 mins). We may try to catch up somewhere along the way but I do need to know what time everyone is leaving Izzy's. Thanks!

I would say if everyone start to arrive by 11:30 to sign up then eat we could be there for awhile. Ride should't start until 12:30 or 1:00 at the latest. Last week I went on a ride that should have started at noon but we didn't get going until 12:30.

Hookup

Postby Bonegirl » 15 Jul 2011, 08:15

Hey, Randy, Ben says he'll keep in phone contact with you if that would help. He can give you a shout when we leave Izzy's and once we're in Brookville if that helps (or some point in between). You may be able to just hook up with us from work to Brookville and meet us out there. Talk to Ben about it.

Copied from the Suzuki_Burgman Yahoo Group:

You are welcome. I hope everyone (but the one guy obviously) enjoyed it. As the saying goes, you can please some of the people some of the time but ………… . Every year I’ve tried to select a totally new and interesting set of roads to ride and a decent restaurant at the end to enjoy. No straight and level boring roads and THAT was certainly true this year! I’ve received suggestions to go north to Springfield, OH next year to Competition Accessories, a monster sized motorcycle dealership, but will have to research the restaurants as I am not familiar with any up there.

Thanks to Richard and Lieber for coming all the way from Ontario, Canada. They put the “International” in the ride’s name and that distance officially qualifies them for the Iron Butt award!
Special thanks to Debbie, Angie and Lisa and the rest of the people from scootercincinnati.com for joining us. They certainly dressed up the group. Especially glad to have the girls join us. Please come back next year and stay for dinner.
Glad to see the entire group!

Bob Reiff
wa8ulw@arrl.net

P.S. to Scootercincinnat.com .............Some postings here say they heard some "not so good things". We can't improve unless we know what they are or what you'd like to see change. Sorry about the U turn in the route this year but I can't predict road closings or missing street signs that weren't there when I did the preride. Please let me know what was wrong in previous years.

Subject: [Suzuki_Burgman] Izzy's International Ride

I would like to thank Bob and Richard for putting together the Izzy's International Ride on Saturday. My nephew Geoff took off work to tag along on this ride and he was impressed. Goeff goes on rides several times a month but said later that night that he was glad to take off work on Saturday to go on the ride. Rides are great as one gets to meet other people and we had a few from scootercincinati.com. Of course there is always one person who just doesn't get it in every group. He was a gone pecan early...no loss.

Anyway great ride and I will be here next year God willing.
