This is a basic summary of the mechanical safety requirements to race from Twist and Gone

Of course, these are subject to change but it's not to be expected. also, if you're running a modern scooter with all of the EPA - polution control stuff still in place / working order, the oil / fuel catch can rule won't apply to you. It's for the heavily modified or vintage type bikes. The only mechanical modifacation you would need is the dead man switch. (If for some reason you become disconnected from your scooter, the dead man switch automatically shuts off the engine.)

Scooter

Must be equipped with a dead man switch.

An oil / fuel catch can is required to avoid oil or gas on the track.

Must be structurally sound. Scooter frames may be lightened but not in such a way that it makes the frame unsafe.

Front and rear brakes are mandatory and in good working condition * Must be in good working condition with no unsafe mechanical defects. Such as a sticking throttle, loose steering, excessive slop in the front end.

Nitrous tanks must be securely fastened to in a manner with a proper mount.

CVT must be covered in such a way that if a belt were to snap no injury could occur to the rider or anyone else.

Gear

A DOT approved full-face helmet in good condition with eye protection.

Full length jeans, at a minimum

Riding Jacket

Leather gloves

Leather Boots or hi-top sneakers made of leather must cover the ankle and be leather.

I would do it a time or two for giggles, but I doubt I would commit too much effort into it, nor would I likely be interested in doing it on a regular basis.

What a great idea! Never heard of bracket racing but makes perfect sense for those without a special drag racing vehicle. I'm checking "I want to race" even though I have limited time available.

I would like to do it too, for a time or two for fun. I just don't have the time or the money to do that on a regular or competitive basis.

Awesome! I'm excited about all of the positive responses.

I would do it a time or two for giggles,

That's the biggest reason I'm doing it.

I would like to do it too, for a time or two for fun. I just don't have the time or the money to do that on a regular or competitive basis.

Once again, a perfect strategy. Fun is the name of the game but remember, within the design of bracket racing - fun and competitive are not mutually exclusive. You don't have to be fast, just consistent and smart.

As far as the money thing goes, from what I'm hearing the entry fee is going to be less than $20.00 per event and a dead man switch is a $20.00, one time expense.
The personal safety gear I'm pretty sure all of you already have. I saw racers at Twist&Gone with leather work gloves and cow milkin' boots for safety gear. 8)

I've currently got a good line on dead man switches and I'm trying to engineer a non permanent way to mount them (without drilling).

Due to scheduling conflicts I'll bet I won't be able to make it to all of the events, but when I can, I plan on trailering the scoot and filling the truck with tools, parts, supplies and snacks. (Bonegirl, as usual, plans on riding out  )

If you have any questions or need help with any of this, let me know. If I can't help or answer your questions, I'll find out who can.

Next Drag Race is coming up

Postby Bonegirl » 09 Jul 2010, 11:57

Just a reminder that Drag Racing will be NEXT Sunday in Brown County, Indiana, July 18th.

Scooterworks Drag Race Series 2010

The series consists of a 5 races on the third Sunday of each month starting in June. There will be two classes, a bracket race for the points, and a heads up King of the Hill class for the glory. Since we are running a bracket style points series all scooters are welcome.

A refresher course on bracket racing from Wikipedia:

“Bracket racing is a form of drag racing that allows for a handicap between predicted elapsed time of the two cars over a standard distance in our case a 1/8 mile (660 ft).

Heads up racing is just that, heads up. We will ladder the drivers the best we can based upon dial in times to keep the races as fair as possible. First one to the finish line without jumping the light wins.

Ok I’m in! How much and where?

Who: Scooterworks USA, NASRA, and the Brown County Dragway.

What: Bracket and heads up scooter racing points series.

When: June 20th, July 18th, Aug 15th, Sept 19th, Oct 17th.
Gates open at 9am, Dial-in starts at 11am

Where: The Brown County Dragway
480 Gatesville Rd. Nashville, Indiana.

How Much? $15 for the first class, $10 for the second

Lets race!
